One of the most common questions we receive from new parents is: When should my child start nursery? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every child is unique, and so is their readiness for their nursery journey. At The Wonder Years Nursery, located in both Dubai Sports City and Remraam, we welcome children starting from as early as 6 months — offering a range of age specific classrooms, designed to meet developmental needs at every stage.

Whether you’re returning to work or seeking a nurturing space to support your child’s growth, this guide will help you understand what age might be right for your little one to begin their nursery adventure.

Is There a Right Age to Start Nursery?

In Dubai, many nurseries accept children from as early as 6 months to 4 years old. But when to begin, depends on several factors:

  • Your child’s social and emotional readiness
  • Your family routine or work commitments
  • Your readiness, as a parent, to take the next step

Some parents prefer to start early to encourage their baby’s social and motor development, while others wait until FS1 to ease the transition into primary school.

Why Start at Different Ages

There’s no right or wrong age — only what is best for your child’s needs:

  • Starting early (6–12 months): Builds emotional security, early sensory awareness
  • Toddler entry (18 months+): Encourages language, coordination, routine
  • FS1 start (3+ years): Focused learning and readiness for transition to primary school.

We embrace each child’s unique starting point with compassionate care and thoughtfully tailored support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 months too early to start nursery?
Not at all! Many parents start early to establish social bonds and routines in a supportive environment.

What if my child isn’t potty trained?
Our team is experienced in supporting children through this stage — no need to worry.

What if my child does not talk yet and we do not speak English at home?
As an International Nursery, we understand that English might not be your first or spoken language. We offer a language rich environment, introducing words, speech and sounds to encourage communication, supporting all levels of understanding.

Settling In With Confidence

Starting a nursery is a big step for both children and parents. That is why we offer a structured settling-in programme, generally recommending at least 5 settling-in sessions during the first week and up to two weeks. These sessions help children gradually adapt to nursery life and are tailored to each child’s individual needs.

Our comprehensive guide on how to prepare your child for their first day at nursery provides age-specific checklists and practical tips to make the transition smooth for both you and your little one.
